Our department's mission is to understand a changing Earth and its relationships with humankind and to develop strategies for a sustainable future. A central, overarching theme in Earth & Environment is climate science, which represents the defining and unifying earth and environmental science issue of the 21st century. The coupled natural and human dimensions of climate change infuse our research, inform our teaching, and enhance our academic programs.


The graduate program coordinator has a vital role managing the Department's PhD and Masters programs, including providing administrative support to the Director of Graduate Studies, and the Director of Professional Master's programs. This position oversees, develops, and implements a wide variety of important tasks that contribute to the success and growth of our graduate programs. The incumbent will provide primary recruitment, management, administration, and advising for these programs, as well as support for the Department's Interdisciplinary graduate programs. This includes administering the admissions process, developing and implementing outreach, advising students on professional and academic development, and ensuring that graduate student payroll and financial aid awards are processed timely and accurately. The position interfaces frequently with the GRS financial aid and records offices in order to affect changes and solve problems.

Duties include:

  • Monitor individual student progress: advise students on program requirements and registration, counsel students with academic difficulty, develop strategies for completion of requirements, review annual reports, manage student records, offer career advising, follow defense procedures and submit paperwork.
  • Administer graduate financial aid, payroll, and support budgets: ensure student payroll accuracy, monitor student account issues and changes, coordinate teaching fellow assignments; advise students on account balances and payroll.
  • Manage the graduate admissions process: answer inquiries from prospective students; process, screen, and organize applications; support the admissions committee; submit admissions recommendations.
  • Develop and implement graduate program advertising, recruitment, and outreach strategy: develop outreach materials, attend open houses and other events, create content and advertise, ensure E&E website is up-to-date.
  • Support curricular planning and assessment: assist faculty and staff with developing the curriculum plan, support the annual bulletin updating process, contribute to assessment of graduate programs.
  • Other responsibilities include managing graduate student desk assignments, and supporting students who travel on university business.

This position is also responsible for planning graduate student programming, including social events, a student seminar series, and new student orientations.


Required Skills

  • B.A./B.S. required (M.A./M.S. preferred), along with three to five years of experience.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with WordPress is a plus
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are necessary
  • Partial remote work options are available
