Center X is a community of educators, in the School of Education and Information Studies, working to transform public schooling to create a more just, equitable, and humane society. Director of California Reading and Literature Project: Major responsibilities include directing the California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP); developing funding; designing programs that meet teacher, school district, and university needs, aligning them to state and national standards, and administering programs. Teach and inform the reading methods course for the Teacher Education Program. Design, plan, and implement programs for novice and experienced reading teachers. Responsible for overseeing, developing, and administering professional development programs in alignment with the goals and vision of the California Subject Matter Projects. Major responsibilities include designing, planning, and administering programs including institutes, follow-up sessions, workshop series, conferences, and district-wide programs. Establish and maintain a liaison with local and county schools. Contribute to CRLP state committees on project policies.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with educators at all levels colleagues, classroom teachers, university faculty, school district personnel, state departments.

Deep knowledge of the subject matter content and critical pedagogy for teaching English Language Arts, English Language Development, and Literature, along with the ability to teach other teachers how to apply a variety of instructional methods that are proven to increase student success in mastering the literacy skills necessary to complete high school and be ready to enter college.

Ability to design and evaluate reading teaching strategies to decide on their effectiveness in specific teaching situations.

Required

Skill in working as part of a team by collaborating with colleagues to design effective Reading education programs and courses.

Ability to communicate effectively to small and large groups to make presentations and convey information about Reading and education policies and practices, elicit cooperation and support, and share new ideas.

Minimum five years experience teaching in middle or secondary classrooms in urban settings.
